Springing
into Summer!
After
suffering through a second consecutive long winter, we find ourselves longing
for spring but it appears as though summer has arrived in its place. As usual, we kicked off the season with our Annual
Spring Beach Clean-Up on Saturday, May 22nd.
We had a very nice turnout of about thirty. With Jim McAleer, Beach Chairman, at the helm, dedicated members
young and old contributed an entire morning and got our beach ready for all to
enjoy. See inside pages for a detailed
report.

Annual
Beach Clean-up A Heartwarming Gathering
Our
Annual Spring Beach Clean-Up had a very nice turnout of about thirty hard
workers. Coffee and refreshments got us
off to a good start. Jim McAleer and
Arthur Pellman moved some of the tree trunks leveled by our vandalizing
neighbor to the north. We learned that
Arthur is the resident artist who several years ago designed our MBEA logo
which depicts blue sails on white waters.
A belated “Thank you!” from us to you, Arthur!
Mike,
Nancy & George Weiss along with Steve, June and Morgan Darnell took to the
beach debris while Lou & Harrison Zimmer worked around the racks.
The
Noto family was there in full force!
Jerome and Heather “took a break” from on-going renovation work on their
house and brought their children Allegra and Luca to help comb the beach. Jane
and Simon
Walsh and their two sons made their first appearance but jumped right in like
beach veterans; especially Simon, who recued two dock pilings lost during the
winter. Very impressive, indeed! Ron
Salstein, who can be counted on to help out whatever the event, did not
disappoint. His daughters, Katlin & Allison were with him and wife Lisa
completed that team. Joe Bellon who has
been a pillar of the neighborhood and the association for many years also
joined us. It's always a pleasure to
see you, Joe! David Spivak and George
Vecsey put in tremendous work. Vern
Nettesheim brought his grandson along; but we missed Ursula this year who was
busy with the other grandchildren visiting for the weekend. Tireless worker Jim Woodring who brought his
little girl with him this year is a burning example of community spirit. Joe Sciacca, our Board President, and John
Tsampas, were there throughout the entire event. Louis Tsampas demonstrated his knack with a pick ax and cleared
away some rotted wood. Marilyn McAleer
and Dody Petruskie reprised their roles as gardeners and pruned the shrubs and
bushes. Special thanks to Bob Madeira
who is always with us, rain or shine.
By
noon, the pristine beach was proof of our good work! Many thanks to all for making our community the special place
that it is!
Dock
Repair Underway
At the
beach clean-up, many of us observed for the first time the severe damage our
dock had suffered last winter as a result of moving ice on the bay. (A photo of the damage is posted on our web
site www.mbayestates.org) Dock pilings
which had been replaced last spring were pulled up from the bay bottom. The catwalk out to the floating dock and the
waterline were also damaged. The
pilings were recently drove back into the bay bottom. The catwalk was repaired just in time for Memorial Day
Weekend. Plumbers will soon replace the waterline. Considering the severe damage throughout
Manhasset Bay, we were pleased to have secured the services and ensured early
repairs. Many thanks to John Tsampas
for coordinating the timely repair.
Special
donations towards dock repair would be greatly appreciated. Please call Joe Sciacca at 944-6058.
The
Felled Trees
We
report with heavy hearts that, for the third year in a row, one or more of our
neighbors had cut down trees at the beach with a chain saw, presumably to gain
a better view. The Association has
filed an official complaint with the Port Washington Police Department which is
now investigating our report and will have the person(s) responsible apprehended. If you witness any destruction to our beach
properties, including the forestry, please contact the Port Washington police
detectives at 883-0500 or Joe Sciacca at 944-6058. This beach and all the plants on it belong to all the
members. We ask that you help us
protect the environment that has given us so much for so long.
The
Dinghy Rack - New Policy to Take Effect This Summer
In view
of the overcrowding situation and to accommodate the increasing number of kayak
enthusiasts among us, we are implementing a new policy for the dinghy rack,
taking effect this summer. New rules
will require that all crafts be registered by calling Jim McAleer on 767-3254,
Lou Zimmer 767-7908, Ron Salstein
767-2906 or Nat Freedman 944-5574.
The user fee is $10.00. We will issue tags to be affixed to the
crafts which should correspond to those on the rack. Any unauthorized crafts will be removed. If necessary, we will add more rack space in
the month of July. Details of this
policy will be posted on our website http://www.mbayestates.org/

Keys
All
current MBEA members are entitled to beach keys. Contact Dody Petruskie on 767-2299 to confirm your membership
status. There is a $5.00 charge for
replacement of lost keys. Please make
sure that your key is with you when you use the beach to avoid being locked
in. The gate is locked at dusk. If someone else is at the beach when you
leave, please let them know you are locking the gate and then lock it. Unauthorized visitors have caused problems
for members and neighbors in the vicinity.
Personal
Beach Parties
Now
that the beach is cleaned, you may wish to use it for personal parties. Please be sure that your membership is
current and that you book the date with two weeks of advance notice. Please call Nancy Weiss on 883-0897 for
reservations. Nancy will also provide
keys to the bathroom. Please be sure to
return them as soon as possible. Your beach keys will allow you entrance. Family members are always welcome. Please accompany your guests to the property
when they visit with us.

Update
on Playground and Beach Improvements
Discussions
continue with the Town of North Hempstead on improving the playground at
Merriman Park. We are presently
awaiting a proposal from the Town which will then be presented to our residents
for approval. After the dock repairs,
budget permitting, we will continue to upgrade the beach facilities, including
the parking lot.
